Reading on the metro

Books rarely make it onto the metro. Phones take up the attention of my fellow travellers: playlists, whatsapp, video games, checking their appearance on the selfie camera. Same for me - there's always a date I need to confirm with someone or a message to send.

And yet, there are a few lone readers. When I spot one I want to know what they’re reading. Sometimes the cover is visible. Or the book design includes what designers call a running head which means the book title is repeated as a header at the top of every page.

Phatic rhythm

My boss likes to talk. He doesn’t need an interlocutor, he needs an audience. As there’s not much call to respond during these daily discourses it’s possible to pay attention to how he structures his speech. Linguistics uses the term phatic communication to describe speech that has a social function rather than an informative one. The Open University describes phatic openings to conversations as an ‘invaluable means of establishing relations before getting down to the real purpose of the encounter’. Here are some of the phatic openings that my boss and other colleagues use (I live in Portugal so these phrases are in Portuguese; I've put an approximate translation in brackets after each one): Eh pá (Hey), Pá (Hey), Olha (Look), Ora bem (Well then), Pronto (Ready), É assim (It’s like this). Os nossos vizinhos dizem que Monte Branco é demasiado caro e que se pode comprar bom pão na padaria em frente. Mesmo assim, vamos ao Monte Branco. Sinto-se bem dentra da padaria: A empresa é eficiente cada funcionário está ocupado com as tarefas que lhe são atribuídas. Dá uma sensação de retidão, de superioridade mesmo.
