Living not at home

As a new learner of Portuguese, I feel that certain words are inseparable: you say one and it takes you directly to the other. I can’t imagine how any native speaker can say tesoura (scissors) without an echo of tesouro (treasure) in their thoughts. The same with areia (sand) and aveia (oats). I can’t imagine any native speaker who, after glancing at a sign for areia para gatos (cat litter, or literally sand for cats) in the supermarket, is not led off into daydreams of cats with wooden spoons cooking flapjacks. These connections are partly an illusion, an effect of my own ignorance. I know so few words and so little about the structure of the language, that when I find a pattern or resemblance I grab it and won’t let go.  Buxo bruxo. Sou um aluno novo desta língua. Sinto que certas palavras são inseparáveis: diz uma e isso leva diretamente para a outra. Não consigo imaginar como um nativo em português pode dizer tesoura sem um eco de tesouro em seus pensamentos. A mesma coisa com areia e aveia . Não consigo imaginar nenhum nativo que, ao olhar para uma placa de areia para gatos no supermercado, não se deixe levar pelos sonhos de gatos com espátulas cozinhando bolachas. Estas ligações são em parte uma ilusão, um efeito da minha própria ignorância. Sei tão poucas palavras e tão pouco sobre a estrutura da língua, que quando encontro um padrão ou semelhança, agarro-o e não o largo.  Buxo bruxo.  Bebé bebe.  Poupe poupa.   Estou a recolher estes pares. Eles sugerem uma ordem no caos de uma língua que não compreendo, mas é uma ordem que é em grande parte inútil.
