Living not at home

The meeting, on the other hand, made perfect sense and concluded with me submitting my tax return. What’s going on? The short answer is that I forgot to change the language on the transcription software. Na quinta-feira à noite, nas aulas de português língua não materna (PLNM) fornecidas pelo nosso município, a professora lançou-nos no conjuntivo. Ô conjuntivo, tem nome como uma infeção ocular.  Ô conjuntivo, você não existe no inglês, ou se calhar transforma-se no subjunctive . A nossa professora faz bem o seu trabalho. Agora compreendemos que o presente de conjuntivo usa se depois de determinadas conjunções e locuções para expressar eventualidade no futuro. Aqui estão três exemplos:     E melhor que consultes um medico.    Vá de taxi para que não se atrase.    Mesmo que chova, vamos ao futebol. Mas não existe uma estrutura definida para traduzi-los para o inglês. Em território desconhecido, e sem um mapa, é melhor seguir o caminho. Decorar as frases do manual escolar: trabalho árduo. Code switching draws you in or keeps you out. Code switching is community and exclusion. Code switching is managing multiple identities and multiple fields of engagement. When people around you code switch they shift the borders, leaving you on new territory even though you thought you hadn't moved.  In linguistics code switching means alternating between two or more languages (or language varieties) in the course of a single conversation.  Code switching has a broader meaning too which includes all the non-linguistic aspects of communication: accent, gesture, body-language.  An example: in the rural hill town where we lived our elderly neighbour would switch mid-sentence from Portuguese to French. My foreignness, my prominent unbelonging, seemed to remind him of his years of graft in Versailles. And this, in turn, triggered his darting visits into the French language. Os manuais escolares de PLNM são escritos para o que precisam um turista ou um estudante Erasmus. Enquanto isso, os explicadores do Youtube estão a organizar o português em nacos gramáticos de 4 minutos. Tudo isto é funcional, não fluido. Ensina-nos a comunicar necessidades específicas ( Onde fica a farmácia mais próxima? ) e emoções fixas ( Estou tão feliz que veio à festa ). Não quero apenas a linguagem de nomear e pedir, quero uma linguagem que traga as coisas à existência, uma linguagem de conversação,  uma linguagem que pendure uma frase na outra para criar um novo espaço, um espaço que implora ser respondido. Uma linguagem como as formas de tangram .  A lingua pode ser generativa sem ter frases longas ou conjugações complexas no condicional (o quer que isso fosse).
