Living not at home

Books rarely make it onto the metro. Phones take up the attention of my fellow travellers: playlists, whatsapp, video games, checking their appearance on the selfie camera. Same for me - there's always a date I need to confirm with someone or a message to send.  And yet, there are a few lone readers. When I spot one I want to know what they’re reading. Sometimes the cover is visible. Or the book design includes what designers call a running head which means the book title is repeated as a header at the top of every page. Rose Feather é ilustradora, criadora de livros e facilitadora de artes. Há alguns anos, Rose e eu trabalhámos juntos num museu em Norwich ( Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art ). Rose deixou esse trabalho e agora é trabalhadora independente . No mês passado tivemos uma videochamada onde ela me falou da sua maneira de colaboração, da escuta profunda, e de como o desenho e as palavras competem pela sua atenção. Lawrence: Em que é que está a trabalhar neste momento? Rose: Tenho um projecto em breve em Stowmarket , fazendo um livro com algumas alunos da escola primária, sobre o tema do amanhã. Na semana passada fui a um evento da série Leitores de Augustina na Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett . Foi presidido por Ines Fonseca Santo .  (The Portuguese text is first; scroll down for the English text. // O texto em português é o primeiro; desce para o texto em inglês.)  Leitores de Augustina Ela tinha combinado os seus dois convidados com dois romances de Augustina Bessa-Luis : as suas perguntas sobre Os Meninos de Ouro (1983) foram dirigidas a Pedro Mexia, e as suas perguntas sobre A Ronda da Noite   (2006) a Lidia Jorge .  É estranho ir a uma discussão literária conduzido numa língua que só se compreende com dificuldade. Livraria Velhotes is a 15-minute walk from where I live: turn left at the top of our street, go past the ruined house with the goats in the garden, past the kindergarten, the football field, the jujitsu studio, the water reservoir and just before you reach the high school the bookstore is on your left.  One of the partners, Pedro Carvalho, told me about the history, spirit and practice of the bookstore. I went back to the book fair a second time.  We're on a budget. And we've moved house three times in the last two years so we know very well the weight and the volume of all the things we own. Two reasons to not to buy books. But the mass of books gathered at the fair creates a territory that I want to step into it.  I approached a stall with attractive-looking books; attractive to me that is, which means uncoated paper, strong visual design, the absence of photographs on the cover, stitched and folio-bound pages (not glued and perfect bound). Yes yes yes – judgments, books, covers – I know.  I let my gaze slide over all the slim volumes of poetry, the hefty art books. Then I stepped closer, took a breath and asked the bookseller What should I read? It's a daft question, too broad to make any sense. Numa sexta-feira de agosto fomos dar um passeio num parque que não tínhamos visitado antes. Estávamos a conhecer novos lugares na cidade. Encontrámo-nos no meio da Feira do Livro do Porto . Não sabemos. Encontrei la inesperadamente. Que bom: entrada gratuita, caminhar por uma avenida de árvores, livros em grandes quantidades sob a luz do sol. Alegria. Uma feira não é uma biblioteca. Os livros são organizados por editora, não por assunto ou género. A banca de cada editora é como uma reunião familiar no Natal - livros que são muito diferentes, reunidos devido às suas origens comuns.  Uma feira não é uma biblioteca. Mas numa feira pode ler sem pagar, pode ler sem possuir o livro: pegue-o, leia-o, ponha-o de volta.  O Presidente Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa também esteve lá nessa sexta-feira.
