Living not at home

Books rarely make it onto the metro. Phones take up the attention of my fellow travellers: playlists, whatsapp, video games, checking their appearance on the selfie camera. Same for me - there's always a date I need to confirm with someone or a message to send.  And yet, there are a few lone readers. When I spot one I want to know what they’re reading. Sometimes the cover is visible. Or the book design includes what designers call a running head which means the book title is repeated as a header at the top of every page. São poucas as pessoas que leem no metro. As atividades preferidas para os meus companheiros de viagem estão centradas no telemóvel: videojogos, chamadas, whatsapp, música, verificando o próprio cabelo na selfie câmara. Mesma coisa para mim - mando mensagens, partilho imagens. Há sempre mais para fazer.  Mas existem uns indivíduos marcantes que tragam um livro. Mal vejo um livro no metro, quero saber mais: autor, título, idioma. O que me atrai nos livros é que o trabalho já foi feito. Em março tive uma reunião com Inês Pina, a coordenadora da Educação Artística (Artes) de Serralves. Falámos de festivais, de desenhar nas mesas escolares e de como conectar várias e diversas opiniões sobre arte. A conversa foi em inglês e começou no atelier educativo; continuou durante uma rápida visita às galerias. A Inês mostrou-me a nova ala e as duas obras que ela tinha escolhido para responder às minhas duas últimas perguntas. Depois da conversa eu traduzi em português. Qualquer erro no português é meu.  Lawrence Bradby: No Reino Unido trabalhei no serviço educativo de vários museus. Gostaria de saber mais sobre o ensino em museus em Portugal. Como é que funciona? In March I met Inês Pina, the Education Coordinator (Arts) at Serralves. We spoke about festivals, drawing on the school desks, and how to connect multiple and diverse opinions on art. The conversation started in the education studio and then continued during a quick tour of the galleries. Inês showed me the new wing and the two artworks that she’d picked in answer to my final two questions.  Lawrence Bradby: In the UK I worked in gallery education. I’m interested in learning about the culture of gallery education here in Portugal. How does it operate? What are its priorities? What are its rewards?
